The Lads Are Heading to the Coast – And They're Hungry for Points!

After two fiercely competitive opening league fixtures, Yeovil's 1st XV are back on the road this Saturday as they travel to Weymouth & Portland, looking to turn encouraging performances into another important league victory.

There's a growing confidence within this Yeovil squad, and with the new coaching set-up beginning to make its mark, the rugby is becoming increasingly exciting to watch.

The skills are developing, the attacking play is becoming more dynamic and the players are beginning to demonstrate exactly what months of hard work on the training pitch can produce.

And looking at this week's team sheet, there's plenty to be excited about!

The Front Row – Not Somewhere You Want to Be Standing!

Jake Mortley and Brandon Brown continue to establish themselves as a formidable presence in Yeovil's front row.

The pair have been putting in some serious work at scrum time, bringing power, physicality and determination to the pack.

This weekend sees the return of Will Tearall, who slots in at hooker to complete what looks like a particularly powerful front-row combination.

With Mortley and Brown either side of him, Tearall will be looking to bring accuracy at the set piece, strength in the scrum and plenty of physical presence around the park.

Scrummaging is about much more than three big lads pushing forwards. Timing, technique, communication and working together as one unit are what make a front row truly effective.

And this combination has all the ingredients to cause Weymouth & Portland some serious problems.

Good luck trying to shift these three backwards!

Welcome Home, Callum Regan!

One of the biggest stories on this week's team sheet is the return of Callum Regan.

After a short spell playing for North Petherton, Callum is back where his rugby roots lie, returning to the club he loves.

And what better way to mark his return than pulling on the Yeovil shirt for his first game back?

Callum starts at number six, blindside flanker, a position that demands serious physicality, intelligence and work rate.

The blindside flanker is often one of the unsung heroes of a rugby side.

Strong tackling, aggressive carries, protecting possession at the breakdown and putting pressure on the opposition are all essential parts of the job.

A good number six needs to be physical enough to stop the big runners, mobile enough to cover the pitch and disciplined enough to make the right decisions under pressure.

It's a role that requires strength, stamina and a willingness to do the hard graft that allows the rest of the team to shine.

Welcome home, Callum. We can't wait to see you back out there! 🖤🤍

Speed, Strength and Sheer Chaos!

If the forwards are going to bring the power, then the backs look ready to bring the entertainment!

With Harry McHugh, Josh Docherty (Doc) and Darren Pointer among Yeovil's attacking threats, there's a rather dangerous combination developing.

Speed, strength and sheer unpredictability.

Harry brings physicality and attacking ambition, Doc adds another dimension to Yeovil's backline, and Darren's pace gives the opposition plenty to worry about whenever space opens up.

It's a combination that can turn a promising attacking phase into something much more dangerous.

And with the coaching team encouraging a more dynamic style of rugby, these are exactly the sorts of players who can make things happen.

One thing's for certain: Weymouth's defence won't want to give them too much room to play!

A Bench That Means Business

Perhaps one of the most encouraging things about this week's squad isn't just the starting XV.

It's the quality waiting on the sidelines.

Frankie Tate is one of the names we're particularly excited to see included.

Frankie has been part of Yeovil Rugby Club since he was just five years old.

After a short spell away last season when Colts numbers were low, he returned to his home club as soon as he was old enough to step into senior rugby.

Now 18, Frankie finds himself named among the 1st XV replacements, with the opportunity to continue a rugby journey that began on these very pitches more than a decade ago.

From a five-year-old learning the game to an 18-year-old preparing for 1st XV rugby.

That's what club rugby pathways are all about.

And you can guarantee he'll be itching to get off that bench and show what he's capable of.

Alongside him are Caspar Hodgson and Harry Froude, two players who are no strangers to starting for the 1st XV.

Having players of that experience and ability available from the bench gives Yeovil real strength in depth and options to change the game when fresh legs are needed.

Then there's Ollie Holloway.

After an outstanding performance for the Barbarians last weekend, including a superb hat-trick of tries against Hornets IV, Ollie has earned himself a place among the 1st XV replacements.

His commitment at training, combined with his impressive performance on the pitch, has clearly made an impression.

It's exactly the sort of progression we want to see across our senior teams.

Work hard, take your opportunities and make it impossible for the coaches to ignore you.

The starting XV looks strong, but the impact players waiting to come on could be just as important.

Two Games, Two Very Different Lessons

Yeovil opened their league campaign with an exciting 34–27 away victory over North Dorset II.

It wasn't always straightforward.

Yeovil were still finding their feet, and at times made life harder for themselves than necessary. But the determination was there, the attacking ability was evident and, most importantly, they found a way to secure the win.

Last weekend brought a very different challenge.

Against a strong Wimborne II side, Yeovil produced some excellent rugby and remained firmly in contention throughout.

With the score at 23–20 heading into the closing stages, a turnover at the ruck allowed Wimborne to break away and score.

Yeovil battled right to the final whistle, holding possession through the closing phases, but couldn't find a way through a determined defensive line.

Yeovil 23 – 27 Wimborne II.

A narrow defeat, decided by a single score.

But it was also a performance that demonstrated how much progress this squad is making.

The work of the coaching team is becoming increasingly visible, with improved handling, stronger attacking phases and a growing confidence in the way Yeovil approach the game.

Two games played. One win. One narrow defeat.

And plenty more still to come.

The Opposition – Weymouth & Portland

This weekend's hosts have endured a difficult start to their league campaign.

With two defeats from their opening two fixtures, Weymouth & Portland are still searching for their first league points of the season.

They will undoubtedly see a home fixture as an opportunity to change that.

But Yeovil will be travelling with ambitions of their own.

After coming so close against Wimborne, the 1st XV will be looking to take the lessons from that performance and turn them into another victory on the road.

Weymouth & Portland may be without a league point, but that certainly doesn't mean they should be underestimated.

A team searching for its first win can be a dangerous opponent, particularly on home soil.

Yeovil will need to start strongly, maintain their discipline and make the most of their opportunities.

Can Yeovil Bring Home the Points?

A victory on Saturday would give Yeovil another important boost in the league standings.

With four league points available for a win, plus the possibility of an additional try-scoring bonus point, there is plenty to play for.

And with the Barbarians also in action at home against Morganians, it's another big weekend for Yeovil Rugby Club's senior men's section.

The numbers are growing, the confidence is building and the competition for places is getting stronger.

The work is showing. The squad is developing. Now it's time to turn that progress into points.
