Yeovil Rugby Club welcomes Wimborne II to Church Lane this Saturday, 3 October, as the 1st XV finally get the opportunity to play their first home league fixture of the 2026/27 season.

Kick-off is 3:00pm, and after both sides started their campaigns with victories last weekend, there is plenty to look forward to.

A serious test arrives at Church Lane

If anyone needed evidence of the challenge Wimborne II will bring, their opening result provides it.

Wimborne travelled to Blandford last Saturday and produced an emphatic 61–0 victory. That gives them one of the strongest starts in the division after the opening round and means they arrive at Church Lane having scored eleven tries' worth of points without conceding a single one.

They are not an unknown quantity either. Wimborne II finished 4th in Counties 2 Tribute Ale Dorset & Wilts South last season, while Yeovil finished 7th. Wimborne also took both league meetings between the clubs in 2025/26, winning 44–25 at Wimborne and then edging a much closer encounter at Church Lane 29–24.

So this is a good early-season examination for Yeovil — and a chance to see how far the squad has moved forward.

Yeovil start with a win

There is plenty of confidence in the Yeovil camp too.

The Pigs opened their campaign away to North Dorset II and returned to Church Lane with a 34–27 victory. More important than simply getting the first league win on the board was the manner of the performance.

Following a busy pre-season and changes within the coaching set-up, there were already signs of the style the squad has been working towards. Yeovil looked more dynamic in attack, showed good handling and skill, and played with real attacking intent.

Darren Pointer, Casper Hodgson, Harry McHugh and Brandon Brown crossed for Yeovil's tries, while Adam Clayson contributed two penalties and four conversions from the tee. James Read was named Player of the Match after an impressive performance.

There was another positive in Jake Mortley making his senior 1st XV debut, adding to the sense of a squad developing as the new season gets underway.

Two winning sides meet

With only one league fixture played, it is far too early for the table to tell us much about where either side will ultimately sit. What we do know is that both teams arrive with a 100% league record.

Wimborne's opening statement was emphatic: 61 points scored, none conceded.

Yeovil's was different but equally valuable: an away victory in a competitive 34–27 contest, with four different try scorers and evidence that the work being done in pre-season is beginning to transfer onto the pitch.

For Yeovil, Saturday is an opportunity to build on that performance and test their developing game against a Wimborne II side that has been one of the stronger teams in this division in recent seasons, finishing 3rd in 2024/25 and 4th in 2025/26.

And this time, Yeovil have home advantage.

Get behind the Pigs

The travelling Yeovil support at North Dorset was fantastic, but this weekend we're back at Church Lane.

This should be a cracking first home league game: two sides coming off opening-day victories, a tough opponent arriving at Church Lane and a Yeovil squad eager to show its home support what it has been working on.
