As we saw from the recent Euro 2020 football game, sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) could happen to anyone, at any time, with approximately 60,000 SCAs happening within the community every year in the UK. 12 SCA’s each week affect people under the age of 35. Sadly statistics show that only 1 in 10 of those affected survives. However, if effective action is taken within the first minute then the chances of survival can treble.
Yeovil Rugby Club Chairman Mr Paul McHugh has been encouraging members from the club to take part in a free online e-learning course so that more people are aware of how to use a defibrillator. Mr McHugh, who now leads the Club as Chairman for his second year, has an extensive background with medical first aid and was the first from within the Club to take part in the course, which only takes around 30 minutes to complete. Yeovil Rugby Club had a defibrillator very kindly donated last year which is available to anyone using the Club and its facilities. Getting the word out and ensuring the general public know how to properly use one is incredibly important to Paul, and to the Club itself.
Anyone can take part in the online course which is provided by UK Coaching, and will help you plan and respond appropriately to an SCA.
