Yeovil Rugby Club has always prided itself on the values we place on equality and inclusivity and this was reflected further with a decision made at this year’s Club AGM. The attendees voted unanimously to change their female team’s title from Yeovil Rugby Ladies to Yeovil Rugby Women demonstrating the forward thinking attitude of the town’s rugby club.
While seemingly small this is a significant change and reflects the global picture of women’s sport with Rugby leading the way. The Rugby World Cup is the first to introduce gender neutral titles to its tournaments. Recognising this and also the changes made by ambassadors of the sport at premiership teams like Harlequins Women and Saracens Women’s in removing the title of ladies in recent years, considering this an outdated view of how women should act ‘being a lady’, ‘being ladylike’. When this change was publicised on social media England player and Harlequins Women’s captain Rachael Burford was one of the first to congratulate the club on this change.
Despite the current restrictions in place, as you can see from the photographs socially distanced training has still been taking place. And the smiles on the player’s faces at the end of each session, both current player and new, show the fun that rugby brings.
Yeovil Rugby Women remain the same committed, welcoming team, as before - passionate about encouraging new players and growing the game. With ten new players joining over the past few weeks their dedication to this is clearly paying off. The women are continually recruiting, so please get in touch for further information.
